Martine Johanna

Martine Johanna is the Illustrator I chose as my favorite because of her drawing's sensitivity, unique use of color, exquisite detail, interesting compositions. Her drawings to me are alluring and gorgeous, yet eerie and sinister. I love her technique with graphite and her original style of painting. Her mix of bright blocks of color on top of fine rendered graphite figures is brilliant and powerful. The execution of hair she illustrates is phenomenal and absolutely is my favorite. The hair looks real, light(weight wise) but also surreal in the quantity of hair. Most of her illustrations aren't tuned for mainstream illustration because it is more fine art. She has a precise eye and hand for delicate details which really helps her stand out from other illustrators. Most illustrators now use digital and full color or black and white pieces, while Martine harmoniously uses both to make a completely unique illustration. Her figures are very distinct from their big wet eyes and soft full lips. I think Martine Johanna is a great example of how fine art illustration can be possibility and shes keeping traditional artwork alive. She's worked for lots of magazines and organizations like Playboy, GLAMCULT, Microsoft and WNF.
